Maggie Johnston is a natural resources specialist working at the Conservation Management Institute at Virginia Tech. She received her Bachelor’s of Science in Wildlife Conservation from Virginia Tech in 2022 and has been working with CMI since. Maggie’s current research focuses on bat population analysis and management, taking her around the Commonwealth, up and down the east coast, and as far as the southwestern United States. In the southwestern US, she has spent time trapping bats and collecting data with stationary acoustic detectors at the front of white-nose syndrome. While bat research has taken up a lot of her time, Maggie has also worked on other projects with CMI, including migratory waterfowl surveys, tree inventories, endangered flora surveys, and invasive species management. Her other research interests include habitat ecology and restoration. Maggie is passionate about protecting natural resources and learning more about the world around her.
